Clone And Backup Your Hard Disks or USB Drives or CDs & DVDs In Ubuntu 12.10

Mondo Rescue

It is a command line utility to backup/restore USB flash drives, hard disk partitions, DVD disks, and CD-R/RW disks.

Run the following commands to install Mondo Rescue in Linux Mint 13 or Ubuntu 12.10/12.04 by opening the terminal:

 wget`lsb_release -r|awk '{print $2}'`/mondorescue.sources.list
 sudo sh -c "cat mondorescue.sources.list >> /etc/apt/sources.list"
 sudo apt-get update
 sudo apt-get install mondo

Run this command to start:

sudo mondoarchive

Select the media to store your data and follow the backup instructions.

2. Clone Disks with the DD Command

The dd command line utility is useful to backup your disks. Let us see some examples:
- Use the given command to backup a partition to another partition:

 dd if=/dev/sda1 of=/dev/sda2 bs=4096 conv=noerror

- Copy a whole disk to another disk by using the command:

 dd if=/dev/sda1 of=/dev/sda3 bs=1M conv=noerror

- To copy your partition to an image file you can use the given command:

 dd if=/dev/sda2 of=/path/to/backup-file.iso bs=4096 conv=noerror

- Run the given command and copy a CD:

 dd if=/dev/cdrom of=/path/to/backup-file.iso

- Run the given command and copy a DVD:

 dd if=/dev/dvd of=/path/to/backup-file.iso
